Dec 12, 2011, 1:45 pmAs you are all aware, we need to raise funds for the renovation of the nets, so how about having a go at a bike ride and getting some sponsorship?
Every year the Birkenhead Tunnel is closed for a day and it is possible to cycle through it as part of the Liverpool to Chester to Liverpool bike ride, a total of 50 miles with a seven hour time limit. Last year over 2800 cyclists went through it, myself and Dave Noble amongst them. It is a fantastic feeling to cycle through the tunnel and who cares about the hill at the other end? It is a superbly organised event with marshals, first aid, mechanics and refreshments at all key points and you get a t-shirt and certificate of completion for your entry fee.
Next year's ride is scheduled for Sunday July 8th and I would like to invite you to join me on the day. The price is currently £19 per person for entries made before the 2nd January 2012. After that date, it goes up a couple of quid. It is also cheaper to enter as a team, so if you are interested, let me know by e-mail to pete.haslam@hp.com, before 24th December when I switch the laptop off for a week, and I will get details from you and make the arrangements.
Once I have numbers, I will seek sponsorship for team shirts and set up a mechanism for sponsorship money to be paid either through a website, or text donation to avoid the difficulties of obtaining money from people who change their minds when sobering up after sponsoring you. I will need the money for your entry up front , but I can sort that out later.
As you can see from the photo below, anybody with a reasonable level of fitness (for those over thirty, this means a waistline lower than your age), some proper training (only drinking when there is a y in the day works for me) and a bike with decent gears for the hills (road, hybrid and trail bikes are better than mountain bikes for this) can complete the course.

Further details of the available distances can be obtained from the Pennine Events website http://www.pennineevents.co.uk/entrysystem/EventDetails.aspx?id=24 but if you choose the 90 mile option, feel free to let me know how it went!
